The following images were scanned using a Mustek Twainscan 600 USB flatbed colour scanner, which I purchased on 20 Feb 1999 for RM380. Take a look also at a few scans I did of colour slides using the transparency adapter.

The Mustek Twainscan 600 USB is so easy to setup - since it uses the USB port, all you need to do is connect it to the PC, and switch it on, and Win98 auto-detects its presence. In fact, you can connect it while it's switched on.
It is surprisingly quiet during scanning operations. It may take upto 50 secs. to warm up, but after that, it's pretty fast to scan.
The graphics scanning software provided, is tightly integrated with the editing software by Ulead called iPhoto Plus 4. Pre-scans show up clearly and you can zoom in to select parts of the photo to scan. Descreening is possible, and exposure is set automatically (and quite well done, too).
I usually scan at the highest resolution first, in 24-bit colour, and target a file size of between 5 to 10 MB.
Once inside iPhoto Plus 4, cropping and flipping the image is easily done. But the best part is retouching the photographs. I love the 'Clone' paint feature, which allows you to repaint scenes that have spots or dirt marks with parts of the picture that contains a 'clean' scene. It's like a copy & paste painting brush. It's brilliant because it maintains the texture or tone of the scene, esp. for complex surfaces like skin or sky.
After all that retouching, I would save the image in .JPG format, reducing it to an average of 260KB for a picture size of at least 1000 x 1000 pixels. Then, if I wanted to use the same image for the web, I would resize it to about 300 pixels in width or height, and the file size would drop to around 20KB.
This package also contains an OCR, which is Textbridge Classic 1.1 by Xerox. This is a simple but accurate OCR, and I found that it handled most documents very well, except complicated layouts or unclear prints.
All in all, I am very satisfied with the Mustek Twainscan 600 USB.
